All the colleges listed here are fully registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC), which means they are authorised to train nurses legally and professionally in South Africa.
Some of these colleges now offer the new nursing qualifications for 2026 students, introduced by the NQF and Higher Education system, while others are still completing their final cycles of the legacy nursing courses that were phased out a few years ago.
The difference between new nursing qualifications and legacy courses lies in the structure, duration, and type of certificate or diploma awarded.
For example, under the new system, a Higher Certificate in Auxiliary Nursing is now a formalised 1-year qualification, and the Diploma in Nursing (General Nurse) runs over 3 years.
Under the old legacy system, many institutions used to offer the Enrolled Nurse (2-year course) and Bridging Courses, which are no longer approved for new intakes.
