School Application Process Guide in North West

North West learner registration

The North West Department of Education runs an annual Learner Registration campaign for public schools. Registration for the 2027 academic year opened on 8 April 2026 and closes on 30 September 2026. Parents can register learners at any public school.

Objectives of the campaign

• To allow teaching and learning to start on the first day of the school year.
• To help schools plan better for the year ahead.
• To avoid long registration queues the following year.
• To help parents plan and budget early for school fees, uniforms and books.

What you'll need

• A birth certificate, certified copy, or other acceptable proof of the learner's date of birth (a baptismal certificate is not accepted).
• Proof of residence.
• An immunisation card, for all primary school learners.
• A study permit, for legal immigrants.
• A transfer card and the learner's last report card, for learners already at a school.

Parents whose application is unsuccessful should seek a place at an alternative school; circuit managers assist with alternative placement. Children without the required documents can be registered provisionally, with up to 12 months given to submit them.
