About the School

Northern Park Primary is more than just a place of learning. It is a community that fosters relationships and partnerships. The school promotes the development of a strong partnership between parents and the institution to build a solid foundation for every learner that enters its gates. This collaboration ensures a seamless transition of learners from home to school, creating a sense of comfort and familiarity.

Subjects

Northern Park Primary School follows the CAPS curriculum, offering a wide range of subjects to cater to different learners’ interests and abilities. The academic programs are divided into Foundation (Grades R-3) and Senior Primary (Intermediate Grades 4-6 and Senior Grade 7). Assessment in the Foundation Phase is based on Continuous Assessment, both informal and formal.

Foundation Phase

The Beehive – Grade R

The Beehive class provides an enriching educational environment for learners aged 5-6 years. Teachers use age-appropriate, constructive play activities to facilitate the learning process while also focusing on important social skills. The curriculum is varied and inclusive, featuring elements of Fantasy and Sensopathic Play, Arts and Crafts, Woodwork, and Music.

Grade 1

The Grade 1 curriculum builds on the foundation laid in Grade R, focusing on primary learning areas such as Literacy, Numeracy, and Life Skills. Northern Park Primary has been selected as a pilot school for the Incremental Introduction of African Languages, which means learners are taught in English as the Language of Instruction and have Afrikaans and isiZulu as their First Additional Languages.

Grade 2

The Grade 2 curriculum continues to follow the CAPS framework, preparing learners for the challenges of Grade 3. Afternoon activities include Language Enrichment classes, a Ball-Skills Programme, and swimming lessons.

Grade 3

Grade 3 offers a learner-centred, skills-based programme that allows learners to apply their knowledge in new and innovative ways. Activities include Language and Mathematics Enrichment classes, Mini-Cricket, Mini-Soccer, and swimming.

Senior Primary

Intermediate Phase – Grades 4 to 6

Moving to the Intermediate Phase, learners are exposed to a wider curriculum. The introduction of three languages, Mathematics, Natural and Social Science, and Life Skills creates a holistic educational experience. The variety of learning experiences cater to diverse abilities and interests, with the school’s well-equipped Media Centre serving as a valuable information resource.

Senior Phase – Grade 7

As the highest grade in Northern Park Primary, Grade 7 aims to prepare learners for the rigors of high school. The curriculum continues the subjects from the Intermediate Phase while also promoting independent learning and leadership skills through roles such as Prefects.

The comprehensive curriculum in each grade level ensures that learners are equipped with the essential knowledge and skills that they need to progress and succeed in their academic journey. By integrating continuous assessments, the school maintains a keen eye on learners’ progress, allowing for tailored teaching strategies and interventions. The interactive classroom setting, bolstered by technology such as projectors and wifi access, further enhances the overall learning experience.

Sporting Activities

The school encourages the students’ physical development by offering various sports activities throughout the year. These include rugby, cricket, swimming, soccer, netball, hockey, cross country, and athletics. Non-sporting activities like Art Club and Drama Group are also a part of the extracurricular programs for learners who are more inclined towards the arts.

Northern Park Primary believes in instilling discipline and unity among its learners, reflected in its uniform policy. Detailed uniform requirements will be provided upon enrolment.
