The 2026 Internship Programme
This is the big one for graduates. The Department is looking for interns for the 2026 to 2028 intake. This is a 24 month contract based in Pretoria. It is a great way to get your foot in the door if you have a tertiary qualification but no work experience.
What you need to know:
- Stipend: They are offering around R7 860.05 per month.
- Duration: 2 years (2026 to 2028).
- Who qualifies: Unemployed South African graduates or postgraduates who have never done an internship before.
They are looking for qualifications in these fields:
- Information Communication Technology (Computer Science, Data Science, Software Development)
- Human Resources Management and Development
- Finance (Accounting, Economics, Supply Chain)
- Communications, Graphic Design, and Journalism
- LLB Degree (Law)
- Construction Project Management
- Tourism Management and Policy
- Public Management and Administration
Other Skills Development Opportunities
If you don’t have a degree or you are looking for something more practical, there are other options available.
1. Culinary and Chef Training
There are a few different programmes here. If you are starting from scratch, they have Culinary Skills Programmes that run for 3 to 12 months. You learn things like baking, food safety, and grilling.
If you are already working as a chef but don’t have a qualification, check out the Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL). This is for chefs aged 19+ with at least 3 years of experience. It helps you get a formal trade test certificate without going back to school full time.
2. Tourism Monitors Programme
This is part of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). It is for unemployed youth between 18 and 35. The training is quite physical because you will be deployed to tourism spots to help with safety and customer care. You must have a clean criminal record to apply for this one.
3. Tourism Graduate Recruitment
This is distinct from the 2026 internship. It is a 12 month programme specifically for graduates with a Tourism or Hospitality qualification. It includes a work readiness workshop and placement with an employer.
