WHERE WE ARE SITUATED LIMPOPO NORTH WEST NORTHERN CAPE GAUTENG FREE STATE EASTERN CAPE WESTERN CAPE MPUMALANGA KWAZULU-NATAL 2 RU READY! RHODES UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUSWHAT MAKES RU SPECIAL & DISTINCTIVE SIZE MATTERS Rhodes University is a small residential, contact, research-intensive university located in the Eastern Cape Province, outside a major urban area and away from major distractions. This offers a unique opportunity for students and staff to focus and excel in their academic pursuit. At Rhodes University, every student is a person with a name and a face, and not just a number. QUALITY ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES WITH EXCELLENT PASS RATES Rhodes University offers the best quality academic programmes through six faculties – Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Commerce, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Education and Faculty of Law. • The University’s approach to learning and teaching is underpinned by the philosophy of exposing students to the nature of knowledge and inducting them to the intricacies of knowledge-creation. • Most academic departments have a low lecturer-to-student ratio. Given the small size of the University, lecturers and tutors get to know each student very well. • Even at undergraduate level, students are taught by research-active academics who also supervise their research projects. These research-active academics can also share with their students some of the latest developments in their field of research interest. • The University has excellent library facilities which have extensive book collections and provide access to electronic materials. 3 RU READY! RHODES UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUSEXCELLENT STUDENT RESIDENCE SYSTEM Rhodes University prides itself in having an excellent student residence system in the country – the envy of many universities. The residence system provides quality living and learning spaces that are conducive to student growth, development and academic success. • Students receive three quality meals prepared in-house every day. • In addition to a bed, the University provides linen which is changed regularly for the comfort of students. • Rooms are cleaned by the Rhodes University staff. • Students have uncapped Wi-Fi in residences and on campus. SAFETY AND SECURITY Rhodes University places great emphasis on ensuring the safety and security of its students and staff through: • A dedicated University Campus Protection Unit. • An extensive CCTV security camera system throughout the campus. • Designated safe campus routes, and • being part of a community policing forum. WHERE LEADERS LEARN It is for a good reason that Rhodes University’s slogan is ‘Where Leaders Learn’. The University develops not just leaders, but ethical and transformative leaders, the kind of leaders that our country and the world need. Students are afforded the opportunity to develop leadership skills through, among others: • Participation as sub-wardens and house committee members. • Running sports clubs, educational and cultural clubs and societies, and • The Student Representative Council (SRC), whose members participate in all the key decision-making committees of the University. 4 RU READY! RHODES UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUSGRADUATE ATTRIBUTES Rhodes University pays much attention to both academic and extra-curricular activities to ensure that students have a rich allround experience and develop valuable distinctive graduate attributes, namely ethical leadership, digital competence, critical and engaged citizenship, curiosity and innovation, empathy and life-long learning. EXCELLENT TEACHING At Rhodes University, students are not taught what to think, but how to think imaginatively, creatively and innovatively. Students are permitted to have a maximum choice of undergraduate major subjects and to graduate with combinations that are of special interest to them. Students can graduate with double or triple majors. While face-to-face interaction remains at the core of our teaching as a residential University, we embrace the growing importance of technology and the need for digital transformation. We promote blended learning and the use of new technologies in teaching and learning, as well as research. CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH Rhodes University is one of the best research-intensive institutions in South Africa: • The University enjoys one of the best research outputs per academic staff member. • Our academics are at the cutting edge of their fields of research, knowledge generation and dissemination and are South Africa’s leaders in a number of fields globally. • We have leaders in, among other fields, medicinal chemistry and nanotechnology, water research, physics and radio astronomy techniques, biotechnology innovation, global change, and environmental sustainability. • Rhodes University contributes enormously to research on teaching and learning and its academics draw on research to inform their pedagogical practice. 5 RU READY! RHODES UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUSTHE BEST COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Rhodes University has one of the best Community Engagement Divisions in South Africa that: • Provides students the opportunity to connect with the surrounding communities through service learning, engaged citizenship/volunteerism, and engaged research. • Ensures that the University has a strong connection and links with the communities of Makhanda and the Eastern Cape towards the creation of relevant knowledge and research that positively impacts the poor whilst earning global acknowledgement and recognition. • Ensures that students are involved in scores of community development projects and can develop a heightened sense and level of social consciousness and responsibility to serve society. • Rhodes University has the highest proportion of student volunteers of any university. INTERNATIONALISATION Rhodes University is a highly diverse and cosmopolitan university with one of the highest numbers of international students from Africa and beyond. The diversity in student population enriches the institutional culture and enhances the intellectual, social, and cultural development of the students. RHODES UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUSHUMANITIES FACULTY The Faculty of Humanities is by far the largest faculty at Rhodes University with 11 academic departments and two schools, it offers a rich variety of courses within four broad categories: • Arts: Drama, Fine Art, Music and Musicology • Languages: isiXhosa, English, Afrikaans, English Language and Linguistics, French, German, Latin, Greek and Chinese • Professional Courses: Journalism and Media Studies • Social Studies: Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Political Studies, History, Philosophy, Art History and Visual Culture and Classical Civilization The Faculty of Humanities offers a very wide range of possible degrees and course combinations. Students can major in Journalism and Politics, Classics and French, German, isiXhosa, Afrikaans, or any other language offered or Management and Industrial Sociology or Organizational Psychology, Fine Art and History, Information Systems and English or Philosophy, Anthropology, Computer Science and Music. Mathematics, Drama or Linguistics. There are many possible combinations; students are requested to read the rules of their degrees to make sure they are on track to complete their degree within the allocated period. The faculty offers an excellent liberal arts education – an education for life which is formative for any career choice. A liberal arts education provides students with critical reasoning skills, in particular, the ability to analyse and evaluate arguments and probe hidden assumptions to organize complex material in coherent ways. A Humanities Degree enhances a student’s ability to understand the views of others, to communicate well, to cope with ambiguity and uncertainty, and to acknowledge one’s ignorance. An education introduces students to the formative moments of their histories, societies, and their identities. It allows students to enjoy words of music and drama and literature and languages. All the above may be combined with degrees or courses, which are more immediately career-orientated than the liberal arts education. Specialised degrees in Journalism or Fine Art or Music are offered. However, all within the context of a broader, rather than technical education. A Humanities Degree opens worlds; it provides education and not training. As such, it provides students with critical skills and characteristics, which are so important for our individual and national development. 14 RU READY! The degree may be completed as a four year, two year, or three year programme. The Faculty admits a limited number of students directly into LLB1. However, most students who wish to pursue legal studies first register for a general degree in another Faculty. Students may choose courses from a wide range of subjects, allowing for various combinations. In their second year, students decide which route to follow. This structure also allows students who realise during their first year that law is not the right career path to change their direction of study without forfeiting a year. RHODES UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUSSCIENCE FACULTY The degree is taken over three years, and the key feature of the Bachelor of Science degree (BSc) is its flexibility. Within the confines set by the timetable, students can combine subjects in myriad ways to create curricula that meet their interests. This flexibility includes allowing students to take a major subject from Commerce, Humanities and Law such that students can major in Environmental Science and Anthropology, Biochemistry and Law, or Geology and Economics. The flexibility in curriculum design allows students to decide if they are attracted to transdisciplinary academic training and education. RHODES UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUS 19CAMPUS LIFE ACCOMMODATION Approximately half of our students reside within our 55 residences, while the other half stay off-campus and are referred to as Oppidans. RESIDENCES The Rhodes University residential system is key to the tradition of friendship and kinship. Currently consisting of 14 halls of residence, each housing between 50 to 120 students, grouped around a central dining hall. Each residence has four houses which have individual constitutions, rules, and traditions. Some halls have both men’s and women’s houses, while others are for men or women only. Although most student rooms are single, some first-year students may be allocated to the few double rooms in various residences; an application may also be made for a double room. The residences are run by hall wardens who are responsible for the general organisation and management of the hall, with the hall committee, acting as an advisory body. Hall and house wardens are always available to help and advise students, but their function is not that of a surrogate parent or ‘watchdog’. Rules are kept to a minimum but are there to maintain an orderly, peaceful environment conducive to studying and community living. For further information please visit: www.ru.ac.za/studentlife/hallsresidences OPPIDANS An Oppidan is an inhabitant of a university town, a student living offcampus in accommodation rented independently of Rhodes University, also known as an Oppi in short. There is an Oppidan Committee whose purpose is to engage with students and look after their interests by keeping open channels of communication. They also assist Oppidan students by providing a support base in the transition between schools and University. They organise events to foster a sense of togetherness so that Oppies do not feel excluded from university life because they do not live on campus. Advice is given on signing lease agreements and being an employer. Through the Oppidan Committee, first-year students can request to be assigned a mentor who will assist them in adjusting and settling into university life off-campus. Oppidans have access to facilities such as the Stephen Bantu Biko building, where the Oppidan dining hall is located, as well as the Oppidan common room where students can relax and have tea and coffee, watch TV, or play a game of pool in between lectures. Free bus service is available until 22:00 on weekdays to transport Oppidans. For further information please visit: 20 RU READY!
