University of South Africa (UNISA) 2027 Application Guide

This guide provides unique, document-backed insights for your 2027 studies at the University of South Africa (UNISA). As the largest open distance learning institution in Africa, UNISA follows a completely different model compared to the traditional universities mentioned in our main 2027 application page.

University of South Africa (UNISA) 2027 Application

The UNISA online application is built for flexibility, but it has very strict "first-time" rules that you must follow to secure a spot.

• The Application Fee Rule: Unlike the UJ online application steps and dates, UNISA requires a non-refundable application fee of R135 for online applications. You must pay this fee immediately, or your application will not be processed.
• One-Choice Limit: UNISA is very different from the WITS online application steps and dates because you are generally encouraged to focus on one specific qualification. While you can sometimes indicate a second choice, the university primarily evaluates you for your first selection.
• The "First-Time Applicant" Status: If you have never registered with UNISA before, you must apply for a student number first. If you already have a student number from previous years, you use that instead of creating a new one.
• Admission Point Score (APS): UNISA uses an APS system similar to the University of the Free State (UFS), where your top six subjects are counted. However, UNISA is often more accessible for students with a lower APS (starting around 15–18 for Higher Certificates).
• Distance Learning Readiness: Before you apply, UNISA requires you to complete a "First-Year Experience" (FYE) self-assessment. This is to ensure you understand that you will be studying alone without a physical classroom.

Important UNISA 2027 Application Dates

UNISA has two main application windows, which is unique in South Africa.

• August/September 2026: Main application period for Semester 1 (January intake).
• April/May 2027: Application period for Semester 2 (July intake).
• Note: High-demand qualifications in Nursing and Engineering often close early.

2027 Admission Comparison: UNISA vs Other Major Universities

The table below shows how UNISA’s distance model compares to the traditional UCT online application and the NWU online application steps and dates.

Using these links helps you see that if you need to work while you study, or if you missed the strict Stellenbosch University (SU) deadline, UNISA is your best alternative. However, if you prefer a free application and a campus life, the NWU online application steps and dates might be a better fit. Always verify the specific 2027 Courses Requirements for your chosen degree before paying the fee.
